Triple challenge trivia: A fun, interactive game to target auditory comprehension

Have you been looking for a fun, interactive game to help target auditory comprehension skills with your students!? Then check out my Triple Challenge Trivia: Listening Comprehension game! It targets listening comprehension skills with four high interest topics including Dinosaurs, Animals, Minecraft, and YouTubers.

This game is a combination of Jeopardy, Double Dare, and Minute to Win It. The game is played like Jeopardy but, if a student doesn’t know the answer, he can “challenge” a student on the other team to answer the question. If that student answers the question correctly, he earns double the points. If he doesn’t know the answer either, he can “triple challenge” the first student to answer. The first student can choose to answer the question or complete a “Minute to Win It” challenge. If the student answers the question correctly or completes the challenge in one minute, then he earns triple the points. The challenges include both mental and physical challenges.

Here are some examples of the types of questions included in the trivia games.

This game contains 30 challenge cards and four separate Jeopardy style games consisting of 25 ‘wh’ questions. Since I use these games to target listening comprehension skills, I read each slide aloud to the students and position the computer/tablet so that they cannot see the text while I am reading. These games can also be played like a regular Jeopardy style game without the challenges if you choose.

Keep reading to see some of the physical challenges in action!

Challenge #17: Stack the Cups and Plates to Match the Picture

In order to complete this challenge, the student is given 6 cups, 3 paper plates, and a picture of the completed stack. The student then has one minute to build the tower to match the picture!

Challenge #18: Transfer Cotton Balls to a Cup on the Student's Head with a Spoon

The student is given a cup filled with ten cotton balls, an empty cup, and a spoon. The student must hold the cup with the cotton balls between her legs and the empty cup on her head. The student must use the spoon to transfer the cotton balls from the first cup to the cup on top of her head.

Challenge #19: Put a Cereal Box Cover Back Together

The student must put the pieces of a cereal box cover back together in one minute or less. I recommend cutting the cereal box into 10 pieces for this challenge. I tried 16 pieces with my 8 year old and she didn’t come close to completing it in one minute. However, if you’re working with older students, you may want to make it more challenging by cutting it into more pieces.

Challenge #20: Move the Different Colored Cup from the Bottom of the Stack to the Top

The student is given a stack of approximately 20 cups. One cup should be a different color and the rest should be the same color (you can also color the rim of one cup with a sharpie if all of your cups are the same color). The different colored cup should be on the bottom and the student must move the different colored cup from the bottom of the stack to the top of the stack by moving cups from the top to the bottom one at a time.

I used 20 cups with my 8 year old student and she was able to complete the challenge in one minute with only a few seconds to spare. You'll have to use your own judgement on this one. If you're playing with younger students you may want to use fewer cups and if you're playing with older students you may want to use more cups.

Challenge #25: Keep 1-2 Balloons in the Air

Player must keep 1-2 balloons in the air for one minute. Choose the number of balloons based on the age/skill level of the student. If you’re playing with older students (or students you know are very athletic) then you may want to use 2 balloons. I use 1 balloon with almost all of my students.

Challenge # 26: Transfer Cotton Balls from One Cup to Another with a Spoon

Player must transfer 10 cotton balls from a cup on one side of the room to a cup on the other side of the room using a spoon. Depending on the size of your room, you’ll have to use your judgement for this one. If you have a very small room, you may want to increase the number of cotton balls.

Challenge #27: Pass a Cup with 5 cards to a Student on Opposite Side of the Room

Players must stand on opposite sides of the room. Player 1 must stack 5 cards on the small end of a cup, pick up the cup and walk the cup to player 2. Player 2 must take the cup from Player 1 and carry back to the starting point and set it back down on the table. Players must complete the challenge without dropping any cards.

Challenge #30: Carry a Cotton Ball on a Spoon Across the Room with a Balloon Between Your Legs

Player must carry a cotton ball from one side of the room to the other using a spoon with a balloon between his legs. The student must make it across the room in one minute without dropping the cotton ball. If he does drop it (and still has time), then he must restart. Again, if you have a very small room, you may want to make the student go across the room and back.
